On behalf of the Counseling Center staffs at the POSTECH, we would like to welcome you to Pohang and our campus. Studying abroad is an exciting adventure as well as a major life transition. While you may be looking forward to all the opportunities that come with living in a foreign country, you may also feel apprehensive about the many unknowns.

Experiencing sharp changes in values and communication patterns, as well as being without your family can be challenging. Korean values, traditions, and habits may be confusing. You may feel disoriented by the different sights, smells, sounds and tastes. You may wonder how you will make friends and how to communicate with others; you may worry about your academic performance and everything you encounter in Korea may be stressful.

When living at home you may have many helpful strategies to deal with stress and difficult situations but these may not be available to you now. As a result you may feel that you are all alone with your problems and that there is no one to talk to. We would like to let you know that you can come to the Counseling Center anytime to talk with one of the Counselors. No problem is too big or small.
Counseling is a process whereby someone who is struggling with some aspect of life enters into a relationship with a trained mental health professional in order to gain insight and make changes in his or her life. This process may involve exploring thoughts, perceptions, behaviors and emotions in order to recognize and understand oneself better.
The counseling experience can assist in reducing feelings of stress, improving one’s ability to make healthy decisions, engaging in healthy behaviors and enhancing one’s relationships with others.
You do not have to have a major mental health concern to seek assistance from the Counseling Center. There are a variety of areas where we can help:

- Loneliness
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Relationships
- Culture Shock
- Adjustment to campus life
- Stress
- Crisis
- Sexual Harassment
The Counseling Center greatly values a student’s privacy and confidentiality. Our services are completely confidential other than for limitations that are mandated by law and professional ethical standards.

Personal information is not released from the Counseling Center without written permission from the student.
